2024-10-21

Detailed Description:
International Electrotechnical Commission's "Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures (IP Code)"

The Degrees of Protection (IP Code) IEC 60529 defines classifications of the degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against the ingress of foreign bodies (such as tools, dust, fingers) and water. This classification is denoted by the letters "IP" (Ingress Protection) followed by two digits.

Degree of Protection - 1st Digit
The 1st digit of the IP code indicates the level of protection against access to hazardous parts with the human body and the ingress of solid foreign objects into the equipment enclosure.

0 - No special protection
1 - Protection against solid objects larger than 50mm, such as a hand
2 - Protection against objects up to 12mm in diameter and longer than 80mm
3 - Protection against tools, wires, etc., with a diameter or thickness greater than 2.5mm
4 - Protection against solid objects greater than 1.0mm in diameter or thickness
5 - Dust protected to prevent harmful accumulation
6 - Dust tight

Degree of Protection - 2nd Digit
The 2nd digit indicates the level of protection against the ingress of water in various forms (e.g., dripping, spraying, immersion) into the enclosure of the equipment.

0 - No special protection
1 - Protection against vertically falling drops of water
2 - Protection against dripping water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15°
3 - Protection against sprayed water
4 - Protection against splashing water
5 - Protection against water jets from any direction
6 - Protection against powerful jets of water, such as from a hose
7 - Protection against the ingress of water during short periods of immersion
8 - Protection against continuous immersion in water under conditions which cause harmful effects (immersion in 1m of water for up to 15 minutes).
